Cuckoo Farm Artist in Residence: Stuart Bowditch - The Sound of Place

  • Thursday 11 January – Sunday 11 February 2024
  • 10am - 4pm
  • 74 High Street, Colchester, CO1 1UE
Past event

The second of our series of artists in residence from Cuckoo Farm Artists Studios - introducing Stuart Bowditch.

Stuart's practice is located in places and communities that exist on the fringes, both geographically and socially, with a particular interest in the sonic landscape, capturing overlooked and overheard noises and using sound as a documentative and creative medium.

Stuart will be responding to the engraving by David Lucas of John Constable’s painting of Stanway Mill, Colchester in our permanent collection. The mill no longer exists but he will visit the place where it was situated to document the sound of the place as it is now. He will use this field research to create an interactive sound experience at the Minories, which all are welcome to take part in.

Stuart will be running free interactive drop-in workshops in the gallery on the following dates:

13th, 14th, 27th, 28th, January, 3rd, 4th February

Workshop structure:

10am-12pm Stuart will work on editing, processing and experimenting with sound. Audience members are welcome to watch and listen.

12 - 4pm Audience members can actively play with sound, experimenting with sampling, looping, improvisation and effects pedals.

For the final weekend of the residency (10th & 11th Feb), Stuart will give two performances of his work on each day at 1pm and 3pm.

The space in which this residency takes place is accessed via stairs, and currently there is no lift available.
